Do you have trouble getting your children to eat healthy snacks throughout the day?

Or have trouble coming up with healthy snacks for your kids?

I used to!

With my girls being picky eaters, especially my 5 year old; I’ve realized how truly difficult it is to have my girls eat healthy snacks. That’s why this past year my two girls and I had an A to Z healthy snack challenge.

Over 26 weeks we came up with over 130 healthy snacks to eat. Some of the snacks immediately became favorite snacks that we all want to have on hand, while others weren’t so great. (It may have been a recipe I found, or the fact that it was the first time I tried making it. Don’t give up on the ones that didn’t work for us!)

Let’s have a look back on those 26 weeks, one letter at a time! With each letter, will come at least 5 healthy snacks. So, if you’re looking for snacks for your kids at home, or snacks to bring in to your childs school that starts with a specific letter; you’ve come to the right place!

If you’re interested in teaching your little ones the alphabet, with more than the use of snacks, you NEED to check out Prep Through Play: Letters!! Your little one will have tons of fun and conquer learning the entire alphabet in 5 weeks through playing games!

Snacks that Start with H

This past week we focused on the letter H.

I am also focusing a little more on becoming vegan. So, it will be rare going forward to see anything in this challenge that has any dairy or eggs in it. For anyone who doesn’t know; I’ve been a vegetarian for the past 18 years, so you’ll never see any food on my site with meat in it.

But, to get back to this challenge, there was only one snack my children didn’t seem to love this week. Keep reading to see what they liked and didn’t like, and try them out for yourself and your children.

If you would like to catch up with the other letters of the alphabet that have been accomplished with this challenge so far, you can. Go here to check out letter G if you missed that, or head over to the A to Z series homepage!

Hummus with Veggies

On Monday I had my girls try hummus with veggies, again.

The more they try it, the more they will start to acquire a taste for it, I hope. It’s going to take a lot longer than just a few tries, though. Hopefully, we can get through this container of hummus before it goes bad.

They loved the tomatoes! Not  the pepper strips or carrots. That’s alright, I used the rest of the green pepper in my quinoa stew. So, I still got them to eat the pepper, I just had to disguise it first. My younger daughter loves my quinoa stew, and so does my husband. If you haven’t read some of my other posts; this is rare that he likes something I cook, so the quinoa stew I make is pretty good. I may end up putting the recipe on my site some time in the future.

Honeydew

On Tuesday we had honeydew.

It’s not quite in season yet, so it was not as good as it could have been. Don’t get me wrong, it was still good.

My older daughter didn’t love it like she usually does, though. She only had a couple of pieces on Tuesday, and so did my younger daughter and myself.

Later in the week we had it again and it tasted a little better. Needless to say, we can’t wait for this fruit to be fully in season; it tastes absolutely amazing later in the summer. But, I guess that can’t always happen when trying to eat based on a letter of the alphabet instead of with the seasons.

Honeycrisp Apple

On Wednesday we had honey crisp apples and they were delicious.

Honey crisp apples may be the most expensive type of apple at the store, but they are completely worth every penny.

Both of my daughters and my husband love them. You can’t lose with these apples, unless you have a health concern in which you shouldn’t eat apples. If you have IBS or are trying to have only low fodmap foods in your diet, then I would not suggest these.

Honeydew Mango Smoothie

On Thursday we had smoothies for breakfast!

It was a green smoothie, too.

This isn’t strange for myself and my older daughter; I’ve been drinking green smoothies since my older daughter was born, and she probably started drinking them when she was a year and a half or 2. But, now my younger daughter is starting to drink from a cup; I gave her some of this in a cup with a straw. She absolutely loved it, she would not put it down or let me take it from her. Luckily, the cup had a lid which the straw went into, so it was a lot less likely that she would spill it everywhere.

In the smoothie we put: honeydew, frozen mango chunks, a banana, spinach, a little bit of flaxseed meal, and unsweetened soy milk. Yep, that is what my 15 month old went crazy about!! Some fruit, veggies, flaxseed, and soy milk. Go ahead and try it out with your kids and comment below to let me know how they liked it.

Honeycrisp Apple Cookies

Friday I baked.

I wanted some cookies and it had felt like forever since I’ve made cookies last. I decided to use some of the honey crisp apples I already had, to make them a bit healthier.

And, they were delicious. I used an oatmeal raisin cookie recipe I found, took out the raisins, and added in about twice as many apple bits, that I chopped up. And, just like the smoothie earlier in the week, my daughters loved these. I enjoyed them, too.

They were soft and the apple bits were still a little juicy. In all honesty, they only lasted 2 days in my home, and that includes the day I made them.

Please share if you found this useful. Go ahead and try this challenge out yourself with your kids; we all know it can be a challenge to get our children eating healthy, and the more options we have to choose from, the more we can all be successful at finding something they will actually eat!!

It’s easier to show them how delicious fruits and veggies are now, than waiting til they’re older and hoping they will eat healthy. This is something we need to teach them and lead by example with.
