Do you have trouble getting your children to eat healthy snacks throughout the day?

Or have trouble coming up with healthy snacks for your kids?

I used to!

With my girls being picky eaters, especially my 5 year old; I’ve realized how truly difficult it is to have my girls eat healthy snacks. That’s why this past year my two girls and I had an A to Z healthy snack challenge.

Over 26 weeks we came up with over 130 healthy snacks to eat. Some of the snacks immediately became favorite snacks that we all want to have on hand, while others weren’t so great. (It may have been a recipe I found, or the fact that it was the first time I tried making it. Don’t give up on the ones that didn’t work for us!)

Let’s have a look back on those 26 weeks, one letter at a time! With each letter, will come at least 5 healthy snacks. So, if you’re looking for snacks for your kids at home, or snacks to bring in to your childs school that starts with a specific letter; you’ve come to the right place!

If you’re interested in teaching your little ones the alphabet, with more than the use of snacks, you NEED to check out Prep Through Play: Letters!! Your little one will have tons of fun and conquer learning the entire alphabet in 5 weeks through playing games!

Snacks that Start with K

This past week we focused on the letter K.

The weeks seem to be going by so fast now. It feels like it was just April, but it’s almost June. My daughters first dentist appointment since we moved from coast to coast is tomorrow. When it was made it felt like it would take forever for it to come, but now it’s almost here and it’s felt like no time has passed.

I guess that’s what happens when you have kids; time flies. And, it doesn’t help that my 4 year old goes around our home telling me she’s 15!

To get back on topic, we tried some new foods this week, most were good, and all tasted good at first. But, there was one snack that tricked us and we didn’t like so much after initially putting it in our mouths.

If you would like to catch up with the other letters of the alphabet that have been accomplished with this challenge so far, you can. Go here to check out letter J if you missed that, or head over to the A to Z series homepage!

Kale Smoothie

On Monday I made a kale smoothie.

It also had baby spinach, banana, frozen mixed fruit, flax seed meal, and water in it.

I loved it and so did my 4 year old, who’s apparently going on 15… My 16 month old didn’t seem too interested in trying this. She’s still working on drinking from a straw. I probably would have rather no kale, and just have spinach be the only veggie in the smoothie. But, that’s the usual smoothie I have, plus chia seeds. I really should’ve put chia seeds in this, I only have about 5 pounds of them.

I’m a big believer in buying in bulk whenever possible; it really is cheaper.

Kiwi

On Tuesday I simply cut up kiwi and gave it as a snack.

Both of my daughters, and myself, love kiwi. So, this snack was a total win all around.

Sometimes simply cutting up a piece of fruit can be the best of snacks. You don’t always have to go all out and make something crazy or creative to get your child to eat better.

Kale and Veggie Pizza

On Wednesday my older daughter and I made kale and veggie pizza.

It can double as a snack and a meal, just cut it smaller for the snack.

I made the dough and helped my daughter put the sauce on. She put cheese on half of the pizza and I put nutritional yeast on the other half, then we put the veggies on together. Ok, I put the veggies on my half and she put veggies on the other half. T

his wasn’t the first time we made pizza together; I didn’t want to have a pile of veggies on one spot of the pizza and then none on another. Even though she helped make the pizza, she wasn’t much of a fan of eating it. My younger daughter loved it though. Well, she at least liked the top of it, because that’s all she ate. She loves veggies, and I love that she loves them. The side of the pizza with nutritional yeast actually turned out way better than I thought it would. It was hard to tell that there wasn’t cheese on it!

Kale Chips

On Thursday I finally made kale chips.

After years hearing about them and reading about them. I almost didn’t make them because I thought we wouldn’t like them. Even when I had them all lined up on the tray ready to be seasoned and put in the oven; I almost just put them in my blender for a smoothie instead.

But, my older daughter told me I had to make the chips. So, I did. And, I’m not sure if I made them right or not, or if it’s an acquired taste. But, they weren’t that good.

The first taste was amazing, my older daughter thought so as well. She immediately told me she loved them, then she ran over to the garbage to spit it out. I felt the same way about them. I don’t even think my younger daughter tried them.

Kiwi Smoothie

On Friday, I made another smoothie, this time with kiwi and mango instead of mixed frozen fruit.

I did use frozen banana this time to make it cold, I don’t like using ice in my nutribullet. Everyone liked this smoothie… My younger daughter drank it with a straw, or at least tried to.

My older daughter told me she liked it, she took a few sips and then put it in the fridge for later. I liked it too, it was a little tangy though. It wasn’t one of those smoothies you could drink by itself, I had to drink water with it. So, we liked it, we didn’t love it though.
