Do you have trouble getting your children to eat healthy snacks throughout the day? Or have trouble coming up with those healthy snacks? I used to. With my girls being picky eaters, especially my 5 year old; I’ve realized how truly difficult it is to have my girls eat healthy snacks. That’s why this past year my two girls and I had an A to Z healthy snack challenge.

Over 26 weeks we came up with over 130 healthy snacks to eat. Some of the snacks immediately became favorite snacks that we all want to have on hand, while others weren’t so great. (It may have been a recipe I found, or the fact that it was the first time I tried making it. Don’t give up on the ones that didn’t work for us!)

Let’s have a look back on those 26 weeks, one letter at a time! With each letter, will come at least 5 healthy snacks. So, if you’re looking for snacks for your kids at home, or snacks to bring in to your childs school that starts with a specific letter; you’ve come to the right place!

If you’re interested in teaching your little ones the alphabet, with more than the use of snacks, you NEED to check out Prep Through Play: Letters!! Your little one will have tons of fun and conquer learning the entire alphabet in 5 weeks through playing games!

Letter M

This past week we focused on the letter M.

My older daughter was happy about this because she’s been asking me to make mango jam and mango ice cream, and she just plain wanted mangoes. Unfortunately, not everything turned out how she wanted it to (most did, though).

As far as creativity goes, there wasn’t too much this week; M is a relatively easy letter to come up with snacks for. So, below you’ll find some pretty simple snacks starting with the letter M. I hope you and you’re children like them. I’ll be a little more creative next week for the letter N for you.

If you would like to catch up with the other letters of the alphabet that have been accomplished with this challenge so far, you can. Go here to check out letter L if you missed that, or head over to the A to Z series homepage!

Mango

On Monday, I simply cut up a mango and we all shared it.

My girls absolutely loved it, they couldn’t get enough of it. I don’t think it was completely ripe yet. I have had sweeter mangoes before. But, as you can see in the picture, I wasn’t even able to get these in a bowl to take a picture of them. My older daughter was taking them as I was cutting them up.

Mango Jam

On Tuesday, I made mango jam (and forgot to take a picture of it, I’m sorry).

Ever since I made mixed berry jam a few weeks ago for the letter J, my older daughter has been asking me to make mango jam. So, I did.

And, she wasn’t a big fan of it, at least not in a pb&j, or anything else. I think it may have been the chia seeds that made it not so good. With the mixed berry jam the chia seeds weren’t as noticeable because of the seeds from the berries; but they were pretty obvious with the mangoes. So, it may have been the way it looked that bothered her more so than how it actually tasted. Her little sister didn’t like it either. She only took one bite of her sandwich with that jam.

Muffins

On Wednesday I made muffins; sweet potato muffins!

I first tried these muffins about a year ago, or maybe it was two years ago. I can’t remember, but they are delicious and healthy and I loved them, especially as a mom. My girls also liked these, too. Sure, they’d rather have chocolate chip muffins or cupcakes, according to my 4 year old.

But, they can have these for breakfast! I don’t even feel bad about; they’re mostly oat flour (that I grind myself) and sweet potatoes. So, it’s basically like having sweet potato oatmeal for breakfast, but tastes much, much better. And, my older daughter believes they are cupcakes as long as she has some nutella on top of hers.

Mango coconut Ice Cream

On Thursday I made mango coconut ice cream for myself and my girls.

And, like every time I make healthy vegan ice cream, we ate it all up in one day, no leftovers.

My girls loved this vegan ice cream. I’ll be typing up the recipe and directions at some point and posting it on my site. Don’t worry, I’ll update this post as well, once I do!. On the post (once written) you’ll find the recipe for this ice cream along with at least 5 other vegan friendly ice cream recipes; all recipes have been tested, tried and approved by myself and both of my girls, and there are never any leftovers. They are that good!!

Melon

I know, I know, I had honeydew for the letter H, but honeydew is also a melon and melons start with M.

Plus, honeydews are more in season now than when we had it last time, so it was about a hundred times better this time around. So, yes, on Friday I cut up a honeydew and we’ve been snacking on it ever since; I don’t think it’ll last to Monday, though (mostly because I’m finishing it off for breakfast right now).

My older daughter had a quarter of the melon all by herself in the past 2 days and my younger daughter didn’t throw as much off her tray as she did last time. So, I’d say it was more of a success this time around!!

This past week wasn’t extraordinary or anything, but we did have some pretty good snacks. I know last week we went to the beach, but my husband only had one day off of work this week. Not much time to do anything fun and get stuff done that needs to get done during our ‘weekend’. But, to sum up our snacks for this past week with a list,

5 SNACKS THAT START WITH THE LETTER M

  1. Mango
  2. Mango Jam

Please share if you found this useful. Go ahead and try this challenge out yourself with your kids; we all know it can be a challenge to get our children eating healthy, and the more options we have to choose from, the more we can all be successful at finding something they will actually eat!!

It’s easier to show them how delicious fruits and veggies are now, than waiting til they’re older and hoping they will eat healthy. This is something we need to teach them and lead by example with.
