Do you have trouble getting your children to eat healthy snacks throughout the day? Or have trouble coming up with those healthy snacks? I used to. With my girls being picky eaters, especially my 5 year old; I’ve realized how truly difficult it is to have my girls eat healthy snacks. That’s why this past year my two girls and I had an A to Z healthy snack challenge.

Over 26 weeks we came up with over 130 healthy snacks to eat. Some of the snacks immediately became favorite snacks that we all want to have on hand, while others weren’t so great. (It may have been a recipe I found, or the fact that it was the first time I tried making it. Don’t give up on the ones that didn’t work for us!)

Let’s have a look back on those 26 weeks, one letter at a time! With each letter, will come at least 5 healthy snacks. So, if you’re looking for snacks for your kids at home, or snacks to bring in to your childs school that starts with a specific letter; you’ve come to the right place!

If you’re interested in teaching your little ones the alphabet, with more than the use of snacks, you NEED to check out Prep Through Play: Letters!! Your little one will have tons of fun and conquer learning the entire alphabet in 5 weeks through playing games!

Letter O

This past week we focused on the letter O. And, seeing as how there aren’t many fruits or veggies that start with the letter O; we had to be a little creative this week. But, that’s alright, my daughters loved everything we had this week.

This week was also a little busier than the past few. If I didn’t mention it in my last post; we’re moving at the end of the month. So, we’ve been doing a lot of packing this week; or, I should say, I’ve been doing a lot of packing this past week. My husband doesn’t think he needs a lot of time to pack things up. We certainly don’t have as much stuff as we used to, but we still need more than 2 days to pack. At least we’re only moving a few minutes away and I won’t have to do any heavy lifting this time.

If you would like to catch up with the other letters of the alphabet that have been accomplished with this challenge so far, you can. Go here to check out letter N if you missed that, or head over to the A to Z series homepage!

Oranges

On Monday we had oranges.

What a surprise, huh?

It was the only fruit I could think of that started with the letter O. My daughters love oranges, we usually have these in our home at all times, along with apples and bananas. Although, my younger daughter likes drinking the juice out of the orange slices and leaving the rest. My older daughter will eat the whole orange, as long as there’s not too much ‘hair’ on it. Which is what she calls the white stuff that keeps the fruit together.

Oatmeal with Apple

I know oatmeal isn’t a fruit or a veggie, but it does start with the letter O and it’s healthy.

So, on Tuesday we had oatmeal with apples and cinnamon. I use Old Fashioned Oats, a little brown sugar and cinnamon, and chop up an apple or two to throw in.

This can be a snack or a quick breakfast option. This is actually one of our regular breakfast options along with vegan pancakes (which I double or triple the recipe and freeze all the leftovers for a quick yummy breakfast). Both of my girls and myself love oatmeal prepared this way.

Owl

On Wednesday I started to be a little more creative for my girls.

We made owls out of an apple, dark chocolate chips, peanut butter, and sunflower kernels(for the feathers). My girls obviously loved apples, peanut butter, and chocolate chips.

I didn’t give my younger daughter the sunflower kernels because she’s still pretty little, but my older daughter tried them and didn’t like them.

Orange Creamsicle

Thursday was another win for our snacks!

My girls are always up for any kind of popsicle.

All I did was blend some oranges together with coconut milk and a little bit of maple syrup and then froze them in mini popsicle molds. They absolutely loved them! My older daughter asked for another one as soon as she finished her first, probably because they were so small. But they were the perfect size for my 17 month old.

Octopus

On Friday we were creative again.

And, no, we didn’t eat real octopus. We made two octopus snacks out of fruit, and chocolate chips. Who doesn’t like a little chocolate once in awhile? The head was made from an apple; and with the way I cut the apple I was able to teach my older daughter about the star inside of every apple. She thought that was really neat. And, the tentacles were made from a banana.

Then, I tried to make part of the sea floor with baby spinach, my girls weren’t too thrilled with that. Actually, the first thing my younger daughter did after I gave her the snack was throw the spinach on the floor. But, hey, at least I tried. And, at least they like spinach in their smoothies!

It’s easier to show them how delicious fruits and veggies are now, than waiting til they’re older and hoping they will eat healthy. This is something we need to teach them and lead by example with.
