Do you have trouble getting your children to eat healthy snacks throughout the day?

Or have trouble coming up with those healthy snacks?

I used to.

With my girls being picky eaters, especially my 5 year old; I’ve realized how truly difficult it is to have my girls eat healthy snacks. That’s why this past year my two girls and I had an A to Z healthy snack challenge.

Over 26 weeks we came up with over 130 healthy snacks to eat.

Some of the snacks immediately became favorite snacks that we all want to have on hand, while others weren’t so great. (It may have been a recipe I found, or the fact that it was the first time I tried making it. Don’t give up on the ones that didn’t work for us!)

Let’s have a look back on those 26 weeks, one letter at a time! With each letter, will come at least 5 healthy snacks. So, if you’re looking for snacks for your kids at home, or snacks to bring in to your childs school that starts with a specific letter; you’ve come to the right place!

Letter Y

This past week we focused on the letter Y. I didn’t have to be as creative this past week with snacks, but it was still a slight challenge coming up with snacks that start with the letter Y. I thought I was going to have to be creative with the names of my snacks; I had ‘yummy vegan cheesecake’ on my list at first. Then I realized how many other different snacks I could come up with y that weren’t so rough on the wallet.

If you would like to catch up with the other letters of the alphabet that have been accomplished with this challenge so far, you can. Go here to check out letter X if you missed that, or head over to the A to Z series homepage!

Yogurt

On Monday we had yogurt, we don’t usually have yogurt in our diet. My girls tried both kinds pictured, I only had the silk. It’s really difficult to find yogurt that is low in sugar, even the siggi’s has 8 grams. That’s 2 full teaspoons of sugar in that little container, and the silk is even worse when it comes to sugar. My girls like both kinds of yogurt- no surprise there with the amount of sugar in them. But, this isn’t going to be a snack we get every week, just once in awhile.

Yellow Pepper

On Tuesday I sliced up a yellow pepper. My older daughter told me it was gross, and my younger daughter threw it on the floor when I gave it to her. I guess I can’t blame them too much, I’m not big on eating peppers raw and by themselves, either. So, this pepper went to a better use, after I tried it. I made my diced veggie vegan burritos with this yellow pepper. My girls and I liked that! We still have leftovers from it, that we’ll be eating today for lunch!

Yellow Squash Muffins

On Wednesday I made yellow squash muffins. I found a zucchini muffin recipe and substituted yellow squash in for the zucchini. They turned out alright, and my girls ate it, but I should have squeezed more water out of the shredded squash before adding it into the mixture. In my own opinion they were a little soggy. Still good. Just a little soggy.

Yellow Fruit

On Thursday I gave my girls and myself some yellow fruit. This included bananas(my husband calls us monkeys because myself and my girls could eat these every single day), pineapple, peaches, and mangoes. And, I know mangoes aren’t that yellow, but my older daughter begged for them to be apart of this snack. I’m pretty sure mangoes are her favorite fruit, especially frozen ones that are warmed up. They really do taste amazing, and they’re a bit cheaper than buying them fresh.

Yellow Squash

On Friday I attempted to saute yellow squash. It didn’t go over so well with my girls, or myself for that matter. Earlier this day I cooked up some tofu in almost the exact same way, and they absolutely loved it. My older daughter dipped it in ketchup, but she still loved it. And, that was my first time attempting tofu in a few years; I even liked it! So, the tofu was a success; the squash, not so much.
