Ingredients for Banana Snowmen
Bananas: This snack does require bananas, sliced not too thin. They need to be able to be slide onto skewers without cracking or breaking apart, so do not cut them too thin. And due to the color, it’s going to be hard to replace bananas with anything else and still have it look like a snowman.
Strawberries: The strawberries are simply used as Santa hats to sit on top of the snowman’s heads. If you don’t have strawberries, or refuse to pay for strawberries in the winter time when they aren’t in season, no biggie! You can omit the hat altogether, or use another fruit to mimic a hat, maybe cut a banana slice into a hat shape and add mini chocolate chips to it to make it a black hat like Frosty’s.
Pretzel Sticks: Pretzel sticks are for the snowmen’s arms. If your snowmen don’t have arms, that’s ok, too!
Chocolate Chips: We use Enjoy Life mini chocolate chips (they’re vegan & allergy friendly) for the snowmen’s eyes and buttons. Feel free to use sprinkles, or other tiny foods if you need to, like cut up cranberries or raisins.
Vegan Marshmallows: These are used for the top of the Santa hats, if you’re not making Santa hats, then feel free to omit. We always use Dandies marshmallows when we need marshmallows (they’re vegan).
Skewers: These are to hold the snowmen together, we just use wooden skewers for these (that we originally bought to make tanghulu – recipe coming…eventually, probably once my oldest daughter can make it on her own so I can photograph it). You can use any type of skewer, or if making this with toddlers, just have them arrange the food on a plate in the shape of a snowman.
How to Make
*Note that these instructions can be printed below
Step one: Slice the bananas at least ½ an inch thick and slide, or twist, 3 slices onto the skewers. Make sure the slices are large enough to fit onto your skewer without breaking of falling apart. If they do end up cracking, but not breaking, simply have the crack in the back when placed down on a plate or tray.
Step two: Cut off the tops of the strawberries and slide on the skewer on top of the banana slices, then add a single mini marshmallow on top. *Use vegan marshmallows if you’re vegan (we like Dandies).
Step three: Then add the pretzel arms to the middle of the middle banana slice.
Step four: Place mini chocolate chips on the top banana slice as eyes, and then add some as buttons on the middle banana slice.
Step five: Add more decorations as desired, maybe a mouth or sprinkles, and enjoy your healthy holiday treat!
Tips For Having Kids Make This Holiday Treat Themselves
It’s always great when kids can make their own snacks!
This is one they can make all on their own, with some supervision, and maybe some help with the skewer (or just have them arrange it on a plate.
But…slicing bananas is one of the first skills a toddler can learn in the kitchen, they can use a butter knife, or a child-size knife if you have one. And bananas are affordable enough, that if they mess up, it’s alright, they’ll probably just eat it anyways.
This snack is excellent for young children to work on their hand-eye coordination.
And if you have older kids, who are a little more experienced in the kitchen, you can simply supervise and watch them work together to make their festive snack!
How to Store
Unfortunately, these snacks don’t stay good for long due to oxidation of the bananas (they turn brown) once they are out of their peel and exposed to oxygen. So encourage your kids to have fun, and then eat their snack before leaving the table!
