Sides are such an important part to making Thanksgiving dinner great!
As a kid, I know I grew up eating mostly sides at Thanksgiving dinner (and desserts), all while being surrounded by relatives who couldn’t understand why I wouldn’t even try the meat they prepared.
But, the one thing everyone had on their plate, including me, was the rolls! So rest assured, whether you’re making a 100% vegan Thanksgiving this year, or a mixed food dinner, everyone will love these fluffy dinner rolls!
Ingredients For These Simple Vegan Dinner Rolls
Sugar: when dealing with yeast (the next ingredient), we really should proof it and feed it some sugar- this helps react and make the dough rise in warmth. I use regular granulated (vegan) sugar here. Brown sugar has also been tested and works just as well.
Yeast: This recipe does require yeast to help the dough rise when warmed. It’s part of what enables the rolls to be both fluffy and soft on the inside and flaky on the outside, like magic!
Soy Milk: You can use any non-dairy milk you please, I’ve found that non-dairy milks with a bit more fat content work best, like soy or oat. Just make sure it is warm when mixing it in, around 100-110℉.
Flour: Only all purpose flour has been tested in this recipe.
Salt: This helps enhance the flavor of the rolls, but can be omitted if you’re avoiding salt.
Plant-Based Butter: Unfortunately, I have not come up with a roll recipe that avoids all vegan butters and oils. The butter adds a richness and depth in flavor that is hard to replace. Luckily, it’s easy to find and buy vegan friendly butter!
Garlic Salt: This is to top the rolls and is 100% optional, but also adds a deliciousness to it and makes it a bit more unique!

Tips for making the best homemade & soft vegan rolls
Being a lover of side dishes, this recipe is one of my favorites and has been tested quite a few times. So, let me share some tips with you to help ensure these turn out amazing!
- Be sure to let the dough rise twice, once as one large ball of dough, and the second time as individual rolls in a baking dish. They don’t rise much while actually baking, so these steps are critical to making sure they turn out how they should.
- Let the dough rise in a warm area of your house. Whether it be in a sunroom or right near your fireplace, on top of a warm stove, etc. It won’t rise if it isn’t warm enough, if it’s not in an area of your home that you’d like to on a cold day, then it’s probably not warm enough.
- Don’t add too much flour! In order for these to come out fluffy, be sure not to add more than 3 cups of flour to the dough.
